April 2013 - December 2014 | Birmingham, AL

Chief Meteorologist presenting weekday weather reports for the CBS affiliate in Birmingham, AL at 5, 6 & 10 pm. Also providing daily afternoon drive-time forecasts for 3 Cumulus radio stations in the Birmingham market. Recipient of the 2014 award for Best Weather Anchor from the Alabama Broadcaster's Association for on-air work in 2013. Gene provided continuous coverage of the 2013 record cold, snow and ice outbreaks in January and February. Gene also provided life-saving 16-hour coverage of record 18 tornadoes which occurred on April 28-29. Gene was responsible for preparing and presenting weekday weathercasts on-air and for a companion 24-hour digital channel as well as on-line and for three Cumulus radio partners. Gene co-produced contributing segments on the anniversary of the deadly April 27, 2011 tornado outbreak in Central Alabama. He assisted community and civic groups prepare for severe weather threats with informative seminars and hands-on weather radio programming. As an associate board member of the Boys and Girls Club of Central Alabama, he educated youth groups on the weather forecasting process and severe weather safety. Gene participated in numerous station-sponsored events including emceeing the American Diabetes Association Father of the Year Award dinner for two consecutive years.

January 2008 - December 2012 | Houston, TX

Served as main weather anchor for the 5, 6 & 10 pm newscasts . While at KHOU, he earned the Texas Associated Press award for Best Weathercast as well as two Lone Star Emmy awards for Best Weather Special. Gene provided continuous on-air coverage before, during and after Hurricane Ike providing life-saving information to viewers, making KHOU the most watched on-line during the storm. Gene also made an accurate forecast five days in advance of Houston's earliest snow on record. He provided diverse coverage of the 2011 heat wave and drought as well as numerous severe weather episodes. Gene enhanced the KHOU weather graphics with the pioneering "Weather Where You Live" neighborhood forecast format. He also developed "The Norman Number", a subjective rating system for the next day's weather from 1 to 10. Gene supervised 3 staff meteorologists and managed equipment valued at approx. $300,000 including Doppler radar. He managed the placement of a live camera network valued at approx. $30,000. Gave dozens of weather safety presentations to local businesses and civic organizations. Gene Norman provided a daily forecast article in the Houston Chronicle, weekday radio forecasts for Cumulus radio partners as well as in-game forecasts for Houston Texans, Houston Astros, Houston Rockets and Houston Dynamo. He served as emcee for dozens of community and charity signature events. Gene is a member of the Weather Research Center board where he aided in raising over $30,000 from corporate donors. He served as an organizing committee member for first two National Flood Workshops.

January 2000 - January 2008 | Atlanta, GA

Main anchor for the 4, 6 & 10 pm weekday newscasts. While at WGCL, Gene Norman earned the Georgia Associated Press award for Best Weathercast in three consecutive years and three Southeast Emmy awards for Best Weathercast and Weather Reporting. Gene developed the "Weather In Your Neighborhood" forecast graphic format, highlighting specific Atlanta neighborhoods. He also developed "Holiday House”, an annual sponsored contest for well-decorated homes during the Christmas season. He gave dozens of weather demonstrations at schools arriving in a weather-instrument equipped van. Provided over 15 hours of extended coverage for tornado outbreaks, ice storm coverage and the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, which spawned multiple north Georgia tornadoes. Enhanced graphic capability with "Weather In Your Neighborhood" highlighting forecasts for neighborhoods around Atlanta. Managed equipment valued at approx. $250,000.

Meteorologist at KTRK-TV

December 1994 - January 2000 | Houston, TX

Weekend anchor for morning and evening newscasts. While at KTRK, Gene earned awards for Best Documentary from Houston Press Club and 2nd place Best Weathercast from the Associated Press. Gene reported live from a dozen hurricanes and tropical storms and assisted in citizen home rescues. He also served as a general assignment reporting on environmental and science stories.
